39 participants of the EuroMBA are currently spending a residential week in Leipzig. The two-year program to be completed on the job was designed for executives with an average of ten years of professional experience and combines the latest technologies in the field of distance learning with compact sojourns for classes at six European universities.
Important for executives: comparing other people’s perception of you with your own
In addition to topics such as innovation management and corporate strategy, executive competence development is a part of the curriculum during the current residential week in Leipzig. Prof. Dr. Timo Meynhardt, who holds the Dr. Arend Oetker Chair of Business Psychology and Leadership at HHL, uses a special diagnostic analysis tool called “My Competence Profile”. It is designed to initiate self-reflection, which is very important for any manager. Only those who know their strengths can work on them, maintaining and expanding their performance and employability,” says the business psychologist. He continues, “Comparing how you see yourself to how others perceive you can be very inspiring and plays a very important role for top-level executives as this no longer occurs in everyday life in many cases. Additionally, the classes introduce approaches for self-development based on psychological findings of how adults learn. This also includes an understanding of what characterizes competence as opposed to a qualification.”
Both elements are relevant for experienced leaders to improve their self-management which is becoming increasingly important in today’s world. In conclusion, Prof. Meynhardt comments, “Those who cannot lead themselves, cannot lead and advance others.”
EuroMBA supports reflection by managers
Student Nick Ryan, 35, who works as Regional Sales Manager Europe at ColorMatrix Group in the Netherlands, is thrilled. The native Brit says, “I particularly liked the competence check, which was easy to interpret thanks to its structure. The test proved to me once again that my strengths lie within the fields of ‘drive’ and ‘implementation’. At the same time, the group discussion during today’s class inspired me to deal with my set of values in a more intense manner. This will lead to people perceiving me as a more authentic and reliable executive.” Nick Ryan’s German classmate, Sabrina Haane, 32, Director of Administration at the Orchesterzentrum NRW, adds, “I enjoyed today’s class also due to the fact that the Leipzig week is my last residential week of the EuroMBA Program. At the end of studies, I can see clearly why I chose this program in the first place: to become more qualified in various spheres. The competence check and the group discussion afterwards reassured me of my strengths in the fields of ‘personality’ and ‘social behavior’. At the same time, I should focus of finding the balance between the big picture and the operative details for my career.”
The EuroMBA residential week in Leipzig also includes a visit to the BMW factory. Moreover, the EuroMBA students from Belgium, Germany, the UK, India, Kenya, Colombia, Portugal, Belarus, Spain, Turkey and the U.S. enter into discussions about and with the start-ups at SpinLab – The HHL Accelerator.
