Biennale 2013: Salon Suisse opened

The Palazzo Trevisan in Venice houses the Salon Suisse.

At this year”s Art Biennale, the Swiss pavilion is presenting a show by Valentin Carron, one of Switzerland”s most popular contemporary artists. Following its official opening on 31 May, the accompanying programme of the Swiss pavilion, “Salon Suisse”, started with two panel talks at the Palazzo Trevisan. Under the theme “The Loss and Gain of Place. Contemporary Art in a Translocal Perspective”, Jörg Scheller, Swiss art historian, journalist and musician, and curator of Salon Suisse, and Monica Juneja, Professor of Global Art History in the Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe” at Heidelberg University, discussed the dialectics of local and global aspects in contemporary art on 1 June.

On 2 June, this was followed by a panel talk between Jörg Scheller and the German philosopher and theorist of postmodern art, Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Welsch, under the theme “Shifting views. Art Beyond the Anthropic Principle”, in which the discussion focused on whether art and aesthetics are capable of questioning the anthropic principle and extending the view of humanity beyond the human perspective.

In mid-June, the “Salon Suisse” staged two performances to enhance the intellectual access to art with sensory experiences. “Go with the Flow: Digital Fluxus” was the title of the performance by “CAMP Festival for Visual Music” on 13 June, in which sound and media artists, VJs and musicians initiated a dialogue between experimental and electronic music and visual art. On 14 June, Bazon Brock, Armin Chodzinski, Daniel Ladnar and Falke Pisano, with Jörg Scheller and Marianne Wagner as moderators, presented new, experimental forms of lecture performances, oscillating between academia and spectacle, entertainment and education.

The first series of “Salon Suisse” events was finalized by a panel discussion on “Artistic Research – A Spark for Re-Enlightenment through the Arts?” With Jörg Scheller as moderator, Professor Henk Borgdorff from the University of the Arts, The Hague, the Swiss author Hans-Jörg Rheinberger (Director at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, Berlin), the artistic director of the Malmö Art Academy, Gertrud Sandqvist, and Professor Giaco Schiesser from the Zurich University of the Arts discussed the question of whether artistic research, as an integral part of the art scene, is capable of having a new, critical effect.

The “Salon Suisse” series of events is initiated by the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia and offers art aficionados, art experts and persons interested in art a platform for the exchange of ideas on contemporary art after the manner of a literary salon in a relaxed atmosphere at the Palazzo Trevisan. The official partner of the programme is the Swiss bathroom specialist Laufen. “Laufen Bathrooms AG is delighted to be the partner of the Salon Suisse for the second time. As a brand standing for a symbiosis of design, quality and functionality, we are supporting the events at the Palazzo Trevisan with the intention to participate in and encourage an international dialogue in the fields of art and architecture”, explains Alberto Magrans, Senior Managing Director of Laufen Bathrooms AG, of the company”s commitment.

The second “Salon Suisse” series of events with more talks, discussions and events under the theme “Power and Economy” will start on 12 September 2013.
