“115 years of HHL – 11+5 HHL faces” portraits Georg Milbradt

HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management, the first business school established in Germany, celebrates its 115th anniversary this year. The institution was founded in the Auditorium Maximum of Leipzig University on April 25, 1898, to train young merchants seeking to lead large companies in an appropriate manner. After World War II, it was absorbed into Leipzig University: in 1969, the GDR opened a business school with a focus on domestic trade. In 1992, today’s HHL was re-established as a private university by the Leipzig Chamber of Industry and Commerce and the Association of Friends of HHL.

Teaching all its programs in English, HHL has been one of the trailblazers in Germany since the mid-1990s. Long before the financial crisis, HHL was one of the first business schools to focus on the conditions for responsible and sustainable leadership.
HHL now responds to the new challenges of leadership in the 21st century through its innovate125 Future Concept, keeping in tune with a holistic approach and expanding the dimensions of effectiveness and responsibility, aided by the perspective of innovation.

On the occasion of the 115th anniversary of HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management, the school publishes the “11+5 HHL faces” series introducing personalities connected with HHL.

*** Georg Milbradt (*1945)

Prof. Dr. Georg Milbradt, former Prime Minister of the Free State of Saxony (2002-2008), is the Chairman of the Board of the Kramer Foundation of HHL. Today the sole purpose of this foundation, which has a history dating back to the early days of Handelshochschule Leipzig in 1887, is to promote HHL in its structure and development. The governing body is the Board of Trustees consisting of the founding institution, the Leipzig Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and representatives of companies and organizations which make significant contributions to the foundation.

Prof. Dr. Milbradt, who holds degrees in Economics, Law and Mathematics, has been an Associate Professor for Public Economics with a special focus on Financial Politics at the Faculty of Economics of the Technische Universität Dresden but is also closely connected with HHL. As State Minister for Finances, he contributed significantly to the re-establishment of HHL in 1992. He provided financial backing for the business school as well as the building from the portfolio of university real estate owned by the Free State of Saxony.

On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the “new” HHL, Prof. Dr. Milbradt said: “Over 40 years ago, I learned about the important role HHL played as the birthplace of German business administration from Prof. Deutsch. Therefore, as the Saxon Minister of Finance, I was thrilled to be able to contribute to giving HHL a fresh start as a modern-day business school after reunification. HHL has seized this opportunity to the fullest as the positive development shows.”
